Rotating Residents

Required Overall Scans:      VCU EM GME Ultrasound-Policy

**All rotating residents must email one week prior to the start of rotation to VCUultrasound@vcuhealth.org informing faculty of their start date

PGY-1 Rotation:

VCU EM Ultrasound PGY 1 Rotation Goals

Goal:

The PGY-1 ultrasound rotation will help the Resident form the fundamental elements of clinical ultrasound. The rotation will take place at VCU emergency department.

Objectives:

  1. The resident will need to submit and receive an “agree” on the following images prior to the end of their rotation:
    1. eFAST – 10
    2. Cardiac – 10
    3. Aorta – 5
    4. OB – 5 (if possible)
    5. DVT – 5
    6. Renal – 5
    7. Biliary – 5
    8. Ocular – 5
    9. Soft Tissue/MSK – 5
  1. The resident will review TEE didactics: PowerPoint on VCU EM website and visiting the pie.med.utoronto.ca website.
  2. The resident will attend the weekly Wednesday afternoon ultrasound conference to include QA, fellow lectures and resident lecture series. The resident will give a 10-minute lecture on a topic of his/her choosing
  3.  The resident will complete 4 scanning sessions per week.

PGY-2 Rotation Goals:

VCU EM Ultrasound PGY 2 Rotation Goals

Goal:

The PGY-2 ultrasound rotation will focus on the fundamental clinical imaging studies as well as introduction to advanced ultrasonography.

Objectives:

1. The resident will need to submit and receive an “agree” on the following images prior to the end of their rotation:
a) eFAST – 5
b) Advanced Cardiac – 5
c) Aorta – 2
d) OB – 2 (if possible)
e) DVT – 2
f) Renal – 2
g) Biliary – 2
h) Ocular – 2
i) Soft Tissue/MSK – 2

2. The resident will review TEE didactics: PowerPoint on VCU EM website and visiting the pie.med.utoronto.ca website. Additionally, the resident will complete a hands-on TEE simulation with faculty or fellow.

3. The resident will practice advanced cardiac imaging skills, including cardiac output measurements and right ventricular systolic pressure measurements. They will demonstrate those skills by submitting, at a minimum, 5 scans to QA faculty.

4. The resident will attend the weekly ultrasound conference on Wednesday afternoons including QA and lecture series. The resident will develop knowledge of current research topics in clinical ultrasound, as demonstrated by short journal article presentation on a research article of the residents choosing during this conference.

PGY-3 Rotation Goals:
